Course Itinerary

Course Objectives:

At the completion of the program the participant should be able to:

1. Identify the anatomy/physiology of the upper and lower extremity venous and arterial systems.
2. Discuss Doppler/color physics and be able to (sonographers) apply these principles to optimize system controls or (physicians) utilize this information for recognizing technical errors which may result in misdiagnosis.
3. Perform routine scan protocols & document Doppler waveforms for arterial & venous evaluations of the lower extremity.
4. Perform routine scan protocol for upper extremity venous evaluation.
5. Identify normal/abnormal spectral Doppler/color characteristics & waveform characteristics for identifying arterial & venous disease. Explain methods for obtaining quantitative information & the diagnostic relevance of each measurement.
6. Recognize image characteristics of acute versus chronic DVT.
7. State the indications and applications of indirect testing methods for lower arterial disease.
8. Apply the information discussed in a clinical setting, under supervised conditions until an accepted level of proficiency has been achieved.
9. Increase knowledge and confidence to perform and/or interpret examinations.

Course Topics:

* Doppler fundamentals
* Venous anatomy/scan techniques, normal characteristics & pathology
* Live demo: evaluation for DVT
* Upper extremity evaluation
* Saphenous vein mapping
* Venous insufficiency and upper extremities
* Lower extremity arterial anatomy/physiology
* Clinical exam/indirect testing
* Direct testing/duplex scanning
* Live demo: duplex arterial
* Live demo: segmental pressures
* Treatment of lower arterial disease
* Hands-on sessions
